I could live with this guy being our 5th WR and return guy. Headbanger He ran back punts and Spiller ran back kick offs.

Wow...he looks pretty impressive. For a minute there, I was thinking we had this guy (Ford) already on our roster. But he hasn't been drafted yet. He looks pretty impressive though. I know I shouldn't really believe wikipedia, but a 4.126 - 40 yard dash? That's unheard of. He reminds me of Steve Smith, which ever smith you prefer, but a whole lot faster...

Nice scouting there FP!

i am sorry but chad clifton was signed as a free agent. his contract with the packers expired before he signed his new deal.

Are you suggesting that maybe Clifton could be our answer for a return guy and 5th WR? winking smiley

Technically you are correct, but likely Clifton and TT had a very good understanding of what the Packers were willing to pay him before Free Agency even started. TT's view was probably that no one would pay the same. Clifton very possibly said, "Well, it is Daniel Snyder so you never know."

The original reference was to a FA from outside the organization. Someone to "add" to the roster, not someone to "keep" on the roster.

I don't think you have to read anything into the comments. Who on this board when talking about signing some Free Agents imply that signing a player from our roster is the same as signing someone who was another team's roster? I know of no one. In fact seemingly everyone who talks about bringing in a Free Agent is talking about a player that ended the season on another team's roster.

Also, there was never any reference to the Bears or Lions. No reference to being upset or up in arms or any of that. Those conclusions at least in this thread are without basis.

Look, the bottom line for me, is I want the Packers to be better next year. I want them to add the pieces they need to be a Super Bowl team. That objective has NOTHING to do with any other team. Ultimately, the best team in the NFC will have to beat out some really good teams. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what city they're in.

My focus in this thread was on acquiring a top notch return man. Jacoby Ford would be such a guy. Not sure TT will go for it because he is right now considered a lower 3rd or high 4th round pick, but I would love to see him in Green Bay. My reference was to what I assume would be a better player for the role that TT brought in this FA to compete for, and trying to make the point in a fun way.

That's it. No need to attempt to make any more out of it than that.

Based on that video, Ford would be worth a 3rd round pick. He looks to have more than just speed but YAC ability.

not quite sure why you are putting words in my mouth about talking about the lions or bears in this post. my first comment was only about OP with the response of clifton. my second post was in direct response about your reply to mine. i never mentioned any other team or player.

to your question about free agents are really "free agents" when they resign with there old team. what type of signing was tauscher last year?

"Those conclusions at least, in this thread, are without basis."

I wasn't directing that comment specifically to you. Hence, I was not putting words in your mouth. But that's the direction the entire thread was going.

You're point about Tauscher is indeed a good one. He was a Packer in 2008, and when he finally did play in 2009 it was as a Packer. To me anyway, the Clifton situation feels different because we have not played any games without Clifton being on our rosters. But, they are technically the same as you point out.

the question about Tauscher is key for me to see your real view on a free agent...was he a free agent sign or not?

if so then how is clifton different?

if not, then why does the Packer roster have him listed as a FA-09 in addition to his draft status?
Re: Finally, TT signs a free agent...

It's not different except in the way I described. We played part of our season without Tauscher in the fold. We never played any of our season without Clifton on the roster.

At any rate, I believe "most" on this board are thinking of players outside of the organization, with no recent history with the team when they think "improve with Free Agents."

You're right jay. People are just getting upset that the Bears are acting like the Redskins this year and going FA crazy. Fact is we are still the better team.

Yup....

How many people really expect the Bears to be a contender without a serious upgrade at WR? I don't see it. Now, they could go out today and sign someone, but there aren't many WRs on the UFA list that scare me, including Owens. They still have limited draft options as well. Also lost a bit in the shuffle is that the Bears OL was rather poor last season and hasn't been addressed yet.

As for the Vikings, their upcoming season, with or without LT, depends largely on #4 coming back and performing like this past season. LT is little more than a lateral move from Taylor at this point and would be meaningless without #4 loosening up defenses. Also, how about this, the NFL is all over Peterson as one of the best RBs, but Grant had the same average per carry, had around 140 fewer yards on the season, and had 1 fumble compared to Peterson's 7. Oh, and this was done with a line that everyone considers a very weak OL.

The Lions, are still the Lions.... winking smiley They seem to be improving but that impacts the Bears and Vikings just as much as the Packers though.

I'm not saying the Packers are without issues, but every team is, and the black and blue division is no exception.
Re: Finally, TT signs a free agent...

Couldn't have said it better. If #4 retires then even with LT and a few other big name players coming in IMO they will take a step back. And if he does return it will be imperitive that he play close to the level he played last year in a career season. I'm not trying to say that we are by far the best in the NFCN, just that even last years division winners are looking at their share of problems and question marks.

And that, good sir, is why I said the entire season that Peterson is the most overrated player in football. Very good running back? For sure. But after watching him game in and game out, not nearly as good as I expected. A lot like Barry in that he would have a surprising amount of carries under a couple of yards and then bust one. But he also didn't have Barry's explosion this season. For the last 8 games or so, he never broke anything.

Definitely not the best in the game, definitely not the best player on that offense, and definitely not someone that I'm overly worried about hanging around for more than a few more years.
