My 2010 draft (no replies)

Here is my attempt at a draft for the Packers. I have broken down the first round to see who might be available for the Packers at #23. After round one things are increasingly impossible to predict, so I have just picked guys that seem to be in about the right spot to be taken.

In round one I am expecting most of the following 10 gone (and if they are not gone they will have gone soon after). DTs Suh, McCoy, QBs Bradford, Clausen, OTs Okung, Williams, Bulaga, CB Haden, S Berry, DE Morgan.

After that I have (11 Denver ILB McClain),(12 Miami NT Dan Williams),(13 SanFran OL Mike Iupati),(14 Seattle RB C.J.Spiller),(15 NYG OT Anthony Davis),(16 Tennessee DE Jason Pierre-Paul),(17 SanFran DE/OLB Brandon Graham),(Pittsburgh CB/S Earl Thomas),(19 Atlanta WLB Sean Weatherspoon),(20 Houston DT/DE Jared Odrick),(21 Cincy WR Dez Bryant),(22 NewEngland WR Damian Williams).

That leaves the Packers to choose between 9 players (among others) OTs Bruce Campbell, Charles Brown, TE Jermaine Gresham, DT Brian Price, NT Terrence Cody, DE Carlos Dunlap, OLB Sergio Kindle, CB Kyle Wilson, S Taylor Mays.

In deciding who to pick from that bunch, I kicked out the higher risk guys first (out go Campbell, Dunlap, Mays). Then I removed the players in positions that don't fit or that we don't particularly need (out go Price, Gresham, Cody). That leaves three picks. CB Wilson, OT Brown, OLB Kindle.

All three might be a minor reach, which may be an incentive to explore a trade-down scenario. I think we would do well if we could trade down in the first and somehow contrive to end up with an extra high round two pick (even if we lose a third in the process). However, we would need a partner who is keen to trade up, and that may be impossible to find.

I liked Kindle the most of the three by a whisker, just ahead of Wilson, but Brown does match a position of the most serious need. The Packers probably have Brown higher on their board than many other teams, because he is a good fit, and on their board he may be no reach at all.

1) OT Charles Brown. Very athletic former TE. Has the feet for LT and is already an accomplished pass protector. Needs to add 10lbs of good weight and get stronger.

2)CB Dominique Franks. 6'0” 192. Confident, instinctive, baits QBs, fluid hips, can play zone, and press or off-man. Good on ST.

3)FS Major Wright. Athletic, good range and ball skills, physical, reads game quickly, closes fast and hits with a good pop. Something of a 'loner' personality, but no red flags.

4)RB Deji Karim 5'8”, 207, 4.37. My 'sleeper' pick. Can play RB at a good level, can catch out of the backfield and can be a viable option at KR.

After these, in the 5th round we have two picks. You could add an OLB like Brandon Sharpe or a talented guy recovering (from ACL) Wisconsin's O'Brien Schofield.

For the remaining picks in rounds 5 (compensatory),6 and 7, it will be developmental guys at almost any position except fullback, I'm betting one will be a QB or another punter.

Some of my picks are favoured by several other draftniks, (especially Brown and Schofield), but that is no disaster.

This year's picks contest (4 replies)

Sorry for the short notice on this. We have all been very busy as of late. Without Sneakers, we are running a bit short handed, so we will be doing the Picks contest a bit differently this year. I have set up a group on Yahoo to participate in this year's contest. If you do not have a Yahoo account, you will have to sign up with Yahoo before being able to sign up for the contest.

When you are logged into Yahoo, go to fantasy sports, and find Pro Football Pickem. Or you can follow this link

Click on the link that says Join Group

It will ask you for a Group ID# and password. Group ID# is 58478 and the password is bearssuck.

From there, it will have you give your name and you will be able to set it up and make your picks for week 1.

It is set up so that you pick every game of the week, including two tiebreakers at the bottom of the page. Each game must be picked 5 minutes before its' respective kickoff. Scores will be calculated each week, with your worst 3 weeks thrown out, so technically you will have until Week 4 to sign up without losing any ground.

If you have any questions, let us know! Good luck!

Edit...We may not to be able to offer any prizes this year, but maybe we can come up with something. We'll keep you posted.

Who's #2? (2 replies)

Is anyone else getting anxious for fantasy season??

This year, most everyone should have Adrian Peterson going number one. The real question is, who comes next? In previous years, it seems like there were always at least 3 or 4 top level guys that could be taken anywhere at the top of the draft. This year it seems like it's a little bit more of a crap shoot.

Michael Turner - Turner was a flat-out stud last year. He carried Atlanta's offense to the playoffs and lightened the load for rookie QB Matt Ryan. With a year under Ryan's belt and the addition of TE Tony Gonzalez, it gives defenses more to worry about than just Turner, which could really benefit Turner in his second season as a starter.

Maurice Jones-Drew - This is MJD's first crack at being "the man" in Jax. While he has been a workhorse for the team since he was drafted, Fred Taylor has always been there taking away his carries. MJD has always shown the potential to handle carrying the full load, but will he come through? Will he continue his return duties?

Matt Forte - The Bears' RB really outperformed any expectations they had for him last year. He took on the full load, and was basically the only weapon the Bears had. The team now has a real arm at QB, but still are very lacking at WR. The Bears also have no reliable backup to push Forte and take away his carries. Will Cutler's presence be enough to keep defenses honest? And is Forte really worth a top 5 fantasy pick only after 1 season in the NFL?

LaDainian Tomlinson - The unchallenged #1 from the last few years has fallen back a bit. He had a rough season and it is hard to tell if it is a sign of things to come, or if it was simply a off-year for LT. He is right up there with AP as the best in the business when he is healthy. But even if he is healthy, there are some other questions surrounding him. The offense isn't what it used to be when it was built completely around him. They now have a very good passing game led by Philip Rivers (who has quietly become a very good QB). The team also are paying a lot of money to backup Darren Sproles, who no doubt will be pushing for more playing time beyond ST. How will these situations effect LT's performance this year? This is by far the toughest player to rank in this year's draft IMO.

DeAngelo Williams - Williams proved last year why he was drafted in the first round the year before. He has got game! The Panthers rushing attack was unstoppable last year, as Williams and Jonathon Stewart combined for over 2300 yards. As good as Williams was, Stewart was right behind him in only his first NFL season. It's hard to tell if they will rush out of the gates again this year, or if defenses will start to stick more defenders in the box. Their other offensive stars, Jake Delhomme and Steve Smith are in the twilight of their careers, and are becoming less and less of a threat. Williams might be the only "RB by committee" player worth taking in the first round, but that approach still makes me nervous.

Clinton Portis - This is a guy who doesn't get nearly as much credit he deserves. Playing on a team that has had a consistently below average offense, he puts up solid numbers every year. He has had injury issues, and while he is still young in age, he has high miles. He continues to be the workhorse for the Redskins, and it is worth pointing out that before a skid over the second half of last season, he was the NFL's leading rusher. The real question is, which half of last season can we expect out of him this year?

Brian Westbrook - Westbrook is an all-around athlete. He can burn you running or receiving. His issue has always been being able to stay on the field. When he is healthy, he is probably in the top 5 of all RB's in the league. Unfortunately, he isn't getting any younger, and it seems unlikely that the injuries are going to stop. He also is coming off of bone spur surgery that will keep him out of most, if not all, of training camp. He is a boom or bust player, but the drawbacks are most likely enough to keep from taking him too high in the draft.

Reggie Bush - Bush caught the injury bug last year, and is looking to rebound in '09. He is a threat to go the distance whenever he is on the field, and he no longer has Deuce McAllister taking away carries. This could be a breakout year for Bush who has yet to tap all of his potential.

Frank Gore - This guy knows how to carry the load, even when there is nobody else around him to take away the attention. The 49ers are very slim at any of the skill positions, but yet Gore still keeps churning away. He may not set the league on fire, but he is consistent and will put up solid numbers.

Stephen Jackson - Jackson was at one time considered a top 3 RB. Times have changed drastically since the Rams were able to score at will, and now find themselves without the likes of longtime Rams Orlando Pace, Isaac Bruce (in '08), and Torry Holt. The Rams are determined to move forward by building their offense around Jackson and a solid running game. This is great for him, but the real question is if there is enough talent around him to keep defenses honest. Jackson is the lone bright spot on the entire team this year. This could be a high risk/high reward pick.

So who will it be? How do you rank even the top 5 players this year? And at what point do you start looking at Saints QB Drew Brees who has been flat out amazing for them? Lots to think about as draft days get closer!

After the draft, absolute bloodbath at LB position. (10 replies)

My last mock here generated exactly zero replies !
I posted this one elsewhere, but I've put it here too, for those that have interest in such things.

One thing is for sure this year, we will lose a number of players to accomodate the 3-4. There are a bunch of guys that could be on the trade block, for draft picks or players.

Let's start with a projected draft, and see how things impact on the team. I'll just go as far as one pick in round six, and assume anyone else is cut or goes on the practice squad. First, here are my somewhat under-the-radar draft choices, because you know how TT always manages to surprise us.

1) Rush LB Michael Johnson 6'7", 266, 4.59 or 4.49 (timed by Lions) or sub-four seconds (timed by Al Davis )
2) NT Ron Brace 6'3", 330, 5.47
3a) DT/DE Chris Baker 6'2", 326, 5.02 (35.5 vertical too)
3b) OL T.J.Lang 6'4", 312, 5.08 Hugely versatile, had a great pro-day
4) OL Louis Vasquez 6'5", 330, 5.16 (also got 39 reps of 225 at the combine). A guard who might be able to play RT
5) CB Jason McCourty 5'11", 190, 4.44. Didn't throw his way so much in 08, but he had 59 tackles + broke up 6 passes.
6) Rush LB Carl Ihenacho 6'3", 245, 4.68. 7 sacks and 18.5 TFL in 2008.

So, your D line is Jolly, Pickett, Jenkins, backed by Harrell, Brace, Baker and Malone. 7 in total

Your LBs are Kampman, Hawk, Barnett, Johnson, backed by Bishop, Chillar, and maybe two (three at most), from these eight: Montgomery, Thompson, Poppinga, Rouse, Hunter, Pettway, Ihenacho, Lansanah, Havner. That leaves about 6 guys that are trade possibilities. I accept that some may have little value to another team, but others may generate some interest. 8 in total

Your DBs are Harris, Collins, Bigby, Woodson, backed by Williams, Smith, plus three of these four: Lee, Blackmon, Bush, McCourty. 9 in total.

Total D is 24, so you could add one guy anywhere you like, to round out the D. Perhaps a free agent signing

On the O line, you have Clifton, Colledge, Spitz, Sitton, Vasquez, backed by Barbre, Giacomini and T.J.Lang. Eight in total, and no room for Moll or Tauscher or Wells or McCaskill. Add together 3QB + 3TE + 5WR + 5RB/FB + 8OL = 24, so you can add one more guy anywhere, to round out the offense, just like you did on the D.

ST adds 3 to the roster (K, P, LS).

Because there are so many imponderables in the dynamics of the team this year, you cannot accurately predict exactly what will happen, but I hope this gives some idea of how big an axe will fall on many players currently on our roster. The linebacker position will be a real bloodbath, as so many fight for a few positions, and many of those guys are trying to learn both a new position, and a new scheme.

Meaningless mocks inc. (Jan 30th) (no replies)

Here is my attempt at a mock draft. Trading draft picks is such an unknown factor, I have included none.

First, we might get a quality free agent. What happens then varies on which guy we get. The two quality FAs I'd chase hardest are Suggs (a proven 3-4 type pass rusher) or Gross (quality OT, can play left or right side).

:

If we get FA OT Gross:
1) OLB(rush) Everette Brown 6'4", 250 (Florida St.) (or Orakpo)
If we get FA OLB Suggs:
1) LT Jason Smith 6'5", 300 (Baylor) (or Monroe, Oher, A.Smith)

2) NT Ron Brace 6'3", 300 (Boston)
3a) OL Jamon Meredith 6'5", 302 (South Carolina) or Kraig Urbik 6'5", 323 (Wisconsin)
3b) 3-4 DE(DT) Dorrell Scott 6'4", 313 (Clemson)
4) OLB(rush) David Veikune 6'2", 255 (Hawaii)
5) OLB/ILB Worrell Williams 6'2", 249 (California)
6) 3-4 DE(DT) G.Hypolite 6'1", 287 (Colorado)
6) NT Antonio Dixon 6'3", 328 (Miami)
7) P Aaron Perez 6'4", 232 (UCLA)

But supposing we get no top quality FAs of note (boo !), then this is a favourite scenario.

1) NT B.J.Raji 6'1", 335 (Boston)
2) OLB(rush) Connor Barwin 6'3", 253 (Cincy)
3a) 3-4 DE(DT) Fili Moala 6'5", 295 (USC)
3b) RT/RG Kraig Urbik 6'5", 323 (Wisconsin)
4) OLB(rush) Phillip Hunt 6'2", 260 (Houston)
5) CB Kevin Barnes 6'1", 188 (Maryland)
6) 3-4 DE(DT) George Hypolite 6'1", 287 (Colorado)
6) NT Antonio Dixon 6'3", 338 (Miami)
7) P Aaron Perez 6'4", 232 ((UCLA)

Below are some analyses, from various sites.

(from draftcountdown) LT Jason Smith (Baylor)
Strengths. Outstanding athleticism, quick, agile and light on his feet. Good size, with room to fill out further. Strong initial punch, good lateral movement, very good against speed-freaks. Aggressive demeanor, smart, great work-ethic, lots of upside.
Weaknesses. Must get stronger, and add a few more pounds. Can improve technique in footwork and leverage. Did not operate in pro-style offense.
Notes. An especially athletic player, as he converted from TE in 2006.

(from TheFootballExpert) Everette Brown DE/OLB
Strengths: Unbelievable speed off the edge and is very quick off the line. Relentless in pursuit and has a non-stop motor. Uses a spin move that is almost impossible to block. Very good in play recognition and can dissect and locate the ball effectively. Good gap discipline. Great strength for his size. Does fairly well against double-teams.

Weaknesses: Not a liability in the run game but is not his strong point. May depend too heavily on the spin move to beat his man. Could struggle in pass coverage if converted to linebacker. Sometimes struggles with neutralizing blocks. May lack the size needed to be an every-down defensive end.

Summary: Everette Brown is an unbelievable pass rusher and his speed and quickness are on an elite level. His spin move is one of the most unblock able moves in the entire country. He has very good initial quicks and never gives up on a play. He is not the heaviest defensive end and struggles at times in stopping the run, possibility due to his smaller size. His bet fit would probably be as an Outside Linebacker in a 3-4 scheme where he could use his speed to drop into coverage and his monstrous pass rushing skills to consistently pressure the quarterback.

Draft Projection: Top 15 Pick

(from New Era Scouting) RG(RT) Kraig Urbik
General Traits
Character / Leadership Ability: No character concerns starting every game since freshman season.
Competitive Nature / Work Ethic: A very hard worker who likes to use his size and punish defenders, productive at OG or OT and never comes out of a game.
Football Intelligence: A smart player who understands the game well.
Size: Powerfully built, and very strong with a nasty streak. Likes to dominate defenders.
Athletic Ability: Average athletically. Gets to the second level but is slow when asked to pull.
Toughness / Durability: Urbik is a very durable player starting 39 straight games entering his senior year at either guard or tackle.

Specific Traits - Offensive Guard
Pass Blocking: Very good pass blocker when his hips are set, but when they aren't he can get knocked off balance. Locks defenders up well with his strength.
Movement / Space: Good quicks for such a big man while working in the line. Does a good job of double teaming linemen and releasing and reaching the linebacker.
Quickness: Good getting hands hands up at the snap. Does a good job of getting to the second level. A little slow when asked to pull. The running backs always seem to be waiting for him to get going.
Run Blocking: Has a good punch off the line and can overpower defenders. Needs to work on getting his pads lower on short yardage as linemen tend to get lower than he does and he can’t use his strength to move them away.
Strength: Has very good strength and only gets knocked backward when he doesn’t get low enough. Has strong thick legs and a powerful upper body.
Technique: Has a good initial punch. Sets up well most of the time and gets into position. He sometimes straightens up and lets defenders get into his body and gets off balance.
Additional Comments: Urbik should be a very productive NFL player. He is very strong and has the ability to reach linebackers at the second level. He’ll need to work on keeping his technique solid during the game. He will probably slip a little during the draft as guards get devalued but will make a team very happy they drafted him.
Injury Concerns: No injury concerns.
Could Be As Good As: Logan Mankins, New England Patriots. Worst Case: Marcus Johnson, Minnesota Vikings
Where He’ll Probably Go: 2nd to 3rd round

(From Draftcountdown) NT Ron Brace
Strengths. Excellent size and bulk. Very fast off the snap. Great strength. Stout at the point of attack. Great against the run.Gets a good push up the middle with his bull rush and can collapse the pocket. Powerful tackler. Can sometimes shoot gaps and penetrate. Nice instincts and awareness. Has lots of experience, is improving and has upside.
Weaknesses. Not a sack artist and linited moves (mostly bull rush). Does not always play with proper leverage. Needs to improve hand use and shed better. Inconsistent motor. Has not faced many double teams.
Notes. Had a great senior year playing alongside Raji. Two-gapper with the potential to be a top 3-4 NT.

(from DraftCountdown) OLB/DE Connor Barwin
Strengths. Outstanding athlete, smooth with good balance. Great range with the burst to close. Has the rush LB speed, and a great first step. Relentless motor. Comfortable in space, instinctive, versatile, terrific work-ethic. Smart. Tons of upside because he is still learning the position, having been switched from TE. Had 16 TFL and 11 sacks for Cincy in 2008.
Weaknesses. Lacks great bulk. Still very raw and needs work on technique and variety of pass-rush moves. does not do a great job against the run....must get stronger.
Notes. Switched from TE at the start of his senior year, and some still see him as a TE. Practiced both positions at the Senior Bowl, and looked good as a pass rusher. Was also a walk-on basketball player for the Bearcats, and played 41 games for them.

(from draft Countdown) Fili Moala 3-4 DE(DT)
Strengths. Fast, athletic, agile. Good size (and room to grow) with long arms. Active and pursues well. Good pass rusher, can get penetration into the backfield. His best fit is as a 3-4 DE.
Weaknesses. Disappears for stretches. Can play too tall. Needs to shed blocks better. Needs to get stronger.
Notes. Cousin to Haloti Ngata.. Arrested for obstructing a police officer in a bar fight,.March 08.
