Should the #4 Be Retired? (10 replies)

That is a really good question. Normally I wouldn't bring this up, but Murphy was in the news and spoke about this.

[packerupdate.net]

Bubba on May 19, 2012 at 6:24 pm
Besides being the QB who was on a winning SB team, what has he really done to deserve his number being retired? IMO nothing. Yes he was on teams that were more or less successful after decades of being in the basement of the NFL. How much was that his doing and how much was that success Wolfs ability to bring in players? IMO R. White was far more important to the Packer teams and the Packer turnaround than Favre ever was! Does Favre deserve to be in the Packer hall of fame? Yes. Does Favre deserve to be in the NFL hall of fame? Probably. Does Favre deserve to have his number retired? NO! Was Favre exiting to watch? Yes! As much for his ability to pull a win out of his butt as his ability to throw an interception. Through all his years of playing for the Packers, in clutch situations, my mantra was (repeated over and over) “Please don’t throw an interception”! Should a player have his number retired that fans would constantly pray “Please don’t throw an interception”? IMO No.

The practice field was across the street and as a six-year old, I was amazed by all the helmets with the "G"s
I watched my first Packer game and I saw the green "G"s on their helmets.
I kept rosters and depth charts on a notebook, a hobby I still do.
I began following "my team" the next year. I bought football cards and rushed to Standard Oil to get stamps to fill out my Standard Oil Stamp Book.
A few Lombardi Packers were still on the team. On offense, Ken Bowman, Gale Gillingham, Carroll Dale and Bart Starr. It was a thing of beauty to see Bart Starr take a snap and fade back into the pocket.
On defense, Dave Robinson, Fred Carr,Willie Wood, Herb Adderley and the fierce Ray Nitchke.
The Pack went 10-4 in a 14 game season, which was good enough to dethrone the Viking and win the NFC Central for the first time since Lombardi.
The Vikings owned the Packers in those days. I wonder if retired d-linemen still to chase down Tarkenton if they see him.
It is great to be a Packer fan now because THE PACK IS BACK !!!

Newhouse made 13 starts last season, and natural improvement is expected from a second-year starter who's yet to turn 24. Lang has developed into a rock-solid left guard, while Sitton and Bulaga form an All Pro-caliber right side. Saturday is 37 now, but centers tend to age well and he has. He's also an ideal scheme fit for Green Bay's zone-blocking system. The Packers don't lack depth, either. Sherrod was a 2011 first-round pick. Dietrich-Smith is versatile and benefited from three spot starts last season. Campbell is an athletic swing man. Rookie Datko may have been a top-32 pick if not for injuries.

Collins Suprised (39 replies)

and disappointed being cut according to his agent (PP). Emphasis on surprised, if they had been in contact as TT alleged, he should have been prepared. The article also says the doctors didn't reach a consensus, without specifics, on whether it was safe for him to play. Hard to know what that means. (I don't just look for a doctor's recommendation, I look for their basis for the recommendation. Often they are more cautious than is sensible. For example, if the worry was an increased chance of another rupture which would likely result in s stiff neck, I can see someone being willing to live with that. If its a significantly increased risk of being a quadriplegic, that's another thing.) But if lack of a consensus is the reason for the TT cit. it would have been easy to forestall "surprise" in advance: "Nick, unless we get a consensus from the doctors that its OK to play, we're cutting you." is simple enough to say. Obviously they didn't. TT seems to lack the ability to be forthright with bad news someone doesn't want to hear. That's unfortunate, and inconsiderate in the long run. In the Favre thing it helped foment a disaster, whereas in this instance it left a bad taste with someone who deserved better. But I think TT had his mind made up a long time ago, and all this has been a charade, he hoping Nick would retire, so he wouldn't have to be seen making the hard decision.

Personnel 101, when giving very bad news to employees, its important to be absolutely blunt and leave no wriggle room for someone to fool themselves. To do otherwise is a disservice to the recipient and bad for the organization.

This TT flaw seems to surface in the lack of contact with other players TT has decided to move on from, Grant a current case in point. What's the problem with simply telling someone the team wants to head in a different direction?

Nobody's perfect, and this is relatively minor compared to his other positive attributes, but still.

Training Camp Competition (6 replies)

OK, so the starting lineup seems pretty much set:

QB: Rodgers
RB: Starks
WR: Jennings
WR: Nelson
TE: Finley
LT: Newhouse
LG: Lang
C: Saturday
RG: Sitton
RT: Bulaga

DE: Worthy
NT: Raji
DE: Pickett

OLB: Perry
ILB: Hawk
ILB: Bishop
OLB: Matthews

CB: Woodson
S: Peprah
S: Burnett
CB: Williams

Where are any spots for competition in the starting lineup? I guess LT, but who else will take it? I doubt Sherrod will be ready to go until a long way through the off-season, otherwise he could be competition there. Then Hawk could face competition from DJ Smith, and Peprah competition from Jennings and McMillan. I'd say the most likely change is DJ Smith taking over for Hawk, but I still don't see that as being extremely likely.

The real competition will be lower on the roster. Nickel back could be a good competition between Shields and Hayward. Backup TE has a ton of competition. Who gets the #5 (or do we have a #6) WR slot? Who stays as the backup DL and LBers (other than DJ Smith)?

Overall, if we can stay healthy, we do seem like a much stronger team going into this year than we were last year (after Collins and Clifton went out at least). I think my main concern is safety (Burnett is still young and Peprah is just ok) and backup/depth on OL.

UFA Darius Reynolds signed (no replies)

Darius Reynolds from Iowa State was signed by the Packers on May 2. An interesting player. He led Iowa State in receptions with 43 catches for 695 yards (16.2 avg).

As Jon Gruden said during his QB Camp episode with Brandon Weeden, Iowa State is “a pretty good football team. Quietly, they’ve become formidable.” You don’t become that quietly formidable without some quietly formidable players. I think that pair of words fits wide receiver Darius Reynolds.

The Cyclones receiver ran a 4.54-40, bench pressed 225 lbs. 23 times, delivered a 6.77 three-cone drill, and posted a 35-inch vertical leap at nearly 6’2″ and 206 pounds. His three-cone time would have been third-best at the NFL Combine and his bench press reps would have topped Marvin Jones’ 22 reps as the best overall. To give you a little more perspective, all of those numbers beat Justin Blackmon’s workouts.

The rest of the story and some analysis on him:

[mattwaldmanrsp.com]
